Mmm...I like apple trees. Think it will be fun to race in the apple trees? Very nice little old apple orchard on the hillside. I bet it will be pleasant to race through the apple trees.
Just in case anyone is wondering, the Von Jakob Vineyard is about 1/2 mile from a gravel road that takes you into the most rideable mountain bike trail in the Shawnee National Forest. Seriously, you could ride down to the spillway and back in about 30 mins and be totally ready to race. Or you could hike or ride down there with a significant other after the race and commune with nature. Or make out even.
We're visiting (from Boulder, CO) St Louis this weekend and would love to do this race! But do you think it's too far to drive for a cx race from the city? Any recs on renting bikes?
I don't think it's too far to drive but I'm used to driving to race... Not sure about renting cx bikes. What size/sizes would you need? We might have something here.
You could also ask on the stlbiking.com message board about renting and/or carpooling:
I talked to the local bike shop, The Bike Surgeon, and they have two 29er MTBs available, a medium and a large. There may be a cross bike to fit you--they're checking on it. I'd let him borrow my 56cm but it's not 100% right now and I'm afraid he might do a bike toss midway thru the race...
You guys have been so helpful and I appreciate the call to the bike shop, but sadly we'll have to pass on the race this weekend. We weren't planning to rent a car and pack bike gear, so it probably won't work out. :( If you ever visit Boulder, look us up and we'll help you race! Have a great time on Sunday and cheers to cx season! :-)

ReplyDeleteChief Heckawee confirmed there will be racing between apple trees. No apple wine though.
ReplyDeleteSir Gareth just dropped off some fancy new stakes and 6 rolls of caution tape. Is he trying to tell me something?
ReplyDeleteStill waiting to hear from someone outside the area that is coming! Is anybody out there?

Thanks for the reply! I'm 5'5 and my boyfriend is 6'3. I'll post something on the forum too. Sounds like fun!
ReplyDeleteGoogle Maps says it would take about 2 hours. Does that seem right? We would spend the day exploring the trails around there and drinking wine!
Excellent idea! 2 hours it is. You will be most welcome in the Shawnee National Forest!
